Welcome to The Nicholist—my weekly list where I gush on everything that’s got me obsessed.
33 1/3 Series
A cute guy DM’d a few weeks ago with “Not me listening to Judy at Carnegie,” after I made reference to it in my play The Bottoming Process (was this flirting?). It prompted me to revisit Judy’s 1961 album made for white gays, Judy at Carnegie Hall, and thus led me to Manuel Betancourt’s book Judy Garland's Judy at Carnegie Hall, written for the 33 1/3 Series. It’s a series of short books spotlighting iconic albums, and you can call me obsessed—I’ve already added Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope and Britney Spears’ Blackout to my TBR.
Now for a brief moment of manifestation: I will write the 33 1/3 book on Ashlee Simpson’s quintessential nepobaby-pop-punk classic Autobiography.
Ashlee Simpson’s Autobiography
Since I am in manifestation mode, I’ve been listening to Ashlee Simpson’s under-appraised magnum opus Autobiography all week. May I recommend the moody ballad about heartbreak and longing, “Undiscovered?” I think so.
Saweetie’s Verse on “In My Face”
The Icy Girl said, “I'ma put this pussy in your face, make it liplock. It's tip-top, your tip's not, gon’ in this grip lock.” That’s poetry.
The Return of Kelly Clarkson, Grammy Award-Winning Recording Artist
We all have our Beyoncés, and for most of us, it’s actually Beyoncé. But for me, it’s Kelly Clarkson. It’s a big week for the members of the House of Clarkson because Kelgend gives us her first full-length non-Christmas album since 2017, and it’s not just any album. It’s her DIVORCE ALBUM. TV has stolen her away from us for too long (I love you, Kelly, my daytime loyalties are with The View), and we are blessed to have our queen back in full musical form. On chemistry, Kelly gives us the vocals we love, the lyricism we miss, and the tracks we will undoubtedly turn into anthems.
KombuchaMosa
As I type this final recommendation of the week, I do so drunk on Proscessco mixed with mango-flavored kombucha. It’s as if your classic mimosa was given a hipster-Erewhon glow-up. It’s a KombuchaMosa. It goes great paired with your favorite brunch item or your loneliness on a Saturday night in. Either way, it’s good for you—it has probiotics.
